Dawson Controls RIP-SCAN system:
The Dawson Controls RIP-SCAN system was developed to fill the need for a
cost effective ripsaw scanning system that will either retrofit an existing system or can
be fitted to a new installation. The flexibility of the Dawson Controls RIP-SCAN system
will allow you to customize our system to meet your production needs.

Flexibility:
Can be installed as a transverse or liner system.
- Will work with any existing servo fence.
- Works with Fixed-arbor or Moving-blade ripsaws
- Can be installed as a left or right feed system
- Input Length, up to 24 ft
- Width, 1 to 30 inches

On Screen Display:
The operator is able to see the rip solution displayed on the
screen in real time. The rip lines are overlaid on the board image so the operator
can see where the cuts will be made relative to the defects and edges. The operator
has the option to override the solution, change the solution, or reject the board.

Touch Screen Controls:
All of the material handling system controls are integrated into the scanner
computer to reduce the wiring requirements for the system. In most cases we can eliminate
all but the pendant station attached to the scanner cabinet and the main motor control
cabinet. The only hard-wired switches you need on the system is an emergency stop, a system
reset, and a control power push button.

Troubleshooting the system:
Troubleshooting the system becomes easier, all of the system inputs are displayed
in graphical format right on the operator screen. Less wiring means less to go wrong. No more
loose connections or broken wires, it's all done in software! All of the system devices
can be operated directly from the operator touch screen.
If you have a dirty photo eye, you can see it right on the screen!
If you want to test a board hook, just touch it!
|
Simple Adjustment:
No more complicated species files. The Dawson Controls RIP-SCAN software uses
simple one-button adjustments to setup for the wood that you are running. Total system calibration
can be done in about 2 minutes.
|
Ripping Parameters:
The Dawson Controls RIP-SCAN software will always give you a Maximum Yield Solution
based on the ripping parameters that you set and the available arbor pockets.
You set Maximum Allowed Bending and Maximum Allowed Wane, then the RIP-SCAN software will edge
trim to the specification that you set.
You set the Maximum Allowed Waste and the software will warn the operator if the best solution will
exceed that amount and allow the operator to run the board or reject it.
When used with a fixed-arbor ripsaw, you may prioritize pockets by entering a value for the pockets
in the arbor setup screen. When used with a moving blade ripsaw, you may prioritize rip sizes by
entering a value for the sizes desired.
Defecting (optional)
With our optional defecting module you can specify the maximum allowed knot size in a given pocket or
if the knot is on the edge of the board it can be cut off with the edging. This works best on moving
arbor saws, as it tends to degrade the net yield on fixed arbor saws. We are not looking for cracks,
shake, mineral stain, or other features in the wood. This is not a million dollar scanning system.
Moisture (optional)
You can install a moisture meter in the system to reject a board if it does not meet you moisture requirements.

Data Management:
Included, at no extra charge, in the Dawson Controls RIP-SCAN package is a complete
data management package that may be configured any way you like to provide you with real-time and
historical production data. Any office computer that is running our data management software
and is connected to the network can access this data to view and print production results. If
you want to look at the data for the board that ran last Tuesday at 10:17:32 AM, you can do
that, or you can pull up all of last week's, last month's, or last year's production to view
and print the statistics.

Total rough mill integration:
When used in conjunction with the Dawson Controls Chop-Saw Optimizing Software the
entire system can be integrated into a total rip-chop management package so that the rip solutions
are weighted to cut for the chop saw cut bill. The chop saws will always have the right widths
to finish the cut bill.
|
Simulations:
No need for special computers to run simulations. Simulations can be run on an office
computer that has the Dawson Controls RIP-SCAN software installed, so you don't have to tie up the
scanner computer for simulations. With the simulation function you can "run" boards from the
historical database or create your own board to test arbor configurations.
|
Arbor Generator (Comming Soon):
Our arbor generator, included in the data management package, will take historical
data from the database and create an arbor configuration that should give you the greatest yield.
|
Retrofit or new installation:
We can upgrade your GreCon / CTBA SuperScan, GreCon-Dimter Scanimation,
Barr-Mullen Compu-Rip, Group Seven Systems Dysys, or any other rip scanning system.
Order your new system with the Dawson Controls RIP-SCAN system.
|
Production:
The computer can provide ripping solutions at the rate of about 200 boards
per min. This means that the vision and computer system will no longer be a bottleneck in
production. The computer is at least 10 times faster than the ripsaw. This means that
you could feed multiple ripsaws from the Dawson Controls RIP-SCAN system.
|
Hardware:
All of the hardware used in our system is off-the-shelf, current production components.
- Vision System: We use the latest state-of-the-art IEEE 1394 CCD cameras. Our filtering algorithms
allow our system to "see" board features as small as 1/16 inch.
- Computer: The computers that we use are standard off-the-shelf computers in an industrial case, nothing
special, no special hardware. We are using the latest Intel Dual-Core processors, along with the
Windows XP Pro operating system.
- Servo Fence Control: We use Galil Motion Control products in our systems. Galil Motion Control
is the industry leader in servo control products.
- Networking: If the system is connected to your network, the system can be monitored in real time
from an office computer, or over the Internet if an Internet connection is available.
|
Telephone and Internet Support:
If the computer can be connected to the Internet, we can connect to the computer
to do software updates and troubleshooting support services over the Internet. We also have
24/7 telephone voice support.
